AAPB Launches Mentorship Program for Communities Considering Public Broadband

Program Brings Peer Support to Communities Exploring Public Broadband

Washington, D.C. | September 23, 2024 — The American Association for Public Broadband (AAPB) has announced the launch of a mentorship program aimed at pairing communities exploring broadband network ownership with cities and towns that have successfully built public networks. This new initiative adds to AAPB’s expanding resources, supporting communities in building their own broadband networks and empowering local control and choice across the U.S.

“We’re excited to match AAPB members with communities seeking to take control of their broadband futures,” said Gigi Sohn, Executive Director of AAPB. “We want to demystify the process for those communities that want to ensure that everyone in their city or town has affordable access to everything that broadband enables, and we believe that our members that own their broadband infrastructure are the best people to do that.”

To make public broadband more accessible, AAPB is opening mentor and mentee enrollment to any interested city or town with no obligation to become a member. Combined with AAPB’s public broadband handbook, Own Your Internet: How to Build A Public Broadband Network, these resources are a key part of AAPB’s strategy to encourage more communities to consider building their own networks.

Applications to become a mentor or mentee are available here:

  • Mentors Apply Here: AAPB is asking volunteers interested in mentoring another community to set aside several hours per month to provide feedback and be available to answer questions.

  • Mentees Apply Here: We are hoping to connect everyone interested with a partner.

With more than 400+ networks serving 700 communities across 33 states, public broadband is answering America's call for reliable, affordable, and accessible internet for all. AAPB encourages all communities and leaders eager to explore the potential of public broadband to consult our handbook and consider joining our mentorship program.

The American Association for Public Broadband proudly represents community-owned broadband networks and co-ops that are fueling the nation's economic future through reliable high-speed internet access. With more than 400+ networks serving 700 communities across 33 states, public––or municipal broadband––is answering America's call for reliable, affordable, and accessible internet for all.
